The Guilford Nonprofit Consortium is a collaborative of nonprofit organizations, large and small, in Guilford County, North Carolina, that fosters mutual assistance and support. The Consortium strives to reach these objectives by providing opportunities for education, collaboration, networking, and celebration.
(Triad, N.C.) – Creating much-needed care packages for the community used to be a valued opportunity for many companies to bring employees together, in one place, to volunteer their time and service to support area nonprofits. However, with strict medical guidelines in place for the Covid-19 pandemic, Novant Health and The Volunteer Center of the Triad decided to go virtual with their latest Day of Caring event.
More than 80 employees from four Novant Health Medical Centers – Forsyth Medical Center, Clemmons Medical Center, Kernersville Medical Center and Thomasville Medical Center – volunteered to help assemble 3,000 toiletry kits this week. These employees then took supplies home and created the individual personal kits, with many enlisting the help of their families.
“This was our first Day of Caring event with Novant Health,” explained Carley Swaim Walker, executive director for The Volunteer Center of the Triad. “Their team helped us put a plan in place that adhered to all Covid-19 medical guidelines, and still allowed their employees to participate, while having an enjoyable, meaningful and safe time doing it.
Some of the employees even personalized the kits by enclosing inspirational messages, while others used fall-themed bags they made. The Volunteer Center staff started the effort by assembling dozens of large bags filled with the exact amount of supplies needed to create each individual personal care kit. These bags were then given to each Novant Health volunteer to take home and complete.
“The Day of Caring event served as a great reminder that this community is made up of a vibrant network of innovative nonprofit organizations,” said Katherine Caster, manager of community engagement at Novant Health. “By partnering with The Volunteer Center of the Triad, our team members were able to find a new way to safely connect and serve alongside others to make a difference in our communities.”
Walker said this was the agency’s first time working with Novant Health, and the collaboration was very successful. “They wanted to engage employees in service, while finding a suitable solution to meet Covid-19 rules. And the staff’s enthusiasm and creativity were so exciting to watch. The demand to make more kits outweighed our supplies, which is a wonderful thing,” Walker added. “This was a purposeful way for the Novant Health team to be involved in a way they normally couldn’t be.”
The toiletry kits were given to five Triad nonprofit organizations: Family Promise, The Bethesda Center for the Homelessness, One Step Further, Crisis Ministry of Davidson County, and the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root and The Volunteer Center of the Triad Partnered Again to Spotlight Service and Volunteerism for the Community
GREENSBORO, NC — For the fourth consecutive year, Gilbarco Veeder-Root and The Volunteer Center of the Triad hosted their annual “Day of Caring” on September 30, 2020, at the company’s Greensboro headquarters, creating thousands of care packages for people in need.
About 260 employees from Gilbarco Veeder-Root participated in this year’s event, working with the team from The Volunteer Center of the Triad, to make care packages for various non-profits in the region. “Our Corporate Caring model aligns businesses with opportunities to give back to the community, both internally and externally”, said Carley Swaim Walker, executive director for The Volunteer Center of the Triad. “We worked very closely with Gilbarco Veeder-Root to identify the right projects for this ‘Day of Caring’ event. Due to the great needs of our non-profit community this year, Gilbarco Veeder-Root’s support and giving back at such a significant level really speaks volumes about the company and their value to our community.”
Walker said both organizations identified numerous beneficiaries this year, including Back Pack Beginnings, Triad Health Project, LifeSpan, Level Up Parenting, and many local church ministries. The teams this year volunteered almost 520 hours at the event – with a service value of approximately $13,000.00 – to make more than 8,700 units of products for non-profits. The product care packages this year included toiletry kits, kids snack packs, first aid kits, infant feeding and diaper kits, and take-home projects where employees would make cat and dog toys. These packages were then distributed to the designated non-profits.
Sebastian Hatch, Gilbarco’s vice president of operations Americas, said the Day of Carling is a time when the company sets aside its normal routines of running the business and dedicates time to giving back to the local communities. “Given that we are also citizens of this community, there is always great enthusiasm from our team in terms of giving back in meaningful ways to those that need it,” Hatch said. “Like many of our team members, I always finish a Day of Caring with a great feeling of fulfillment, knowing that I did my part to help someone else who needs it. The gratitude that we receive from those in the community that we partner with makes the experience all the more rewarding.”
Walker praised Gilbarco’s ambitious effort and its results. “The Gilbarco Day of Caring project is the largest we manage annually through our Corporate Caring model. The impact of this project and the amount of product distributed back out into the community creates a ripple effect of caring as basic needs are being met,” Walker said.

GREENSBORO, June 25th, 2020 — Like many events, The 2020 Human Race fundraiser and 5k became virtual. The 26th annual fundraiser is facilitated by the Volunteer Center of the Triad and allows participants to raise money for their favorite nonprofit! This year, registrants were able to run, walk, roll, wag their 5k or 1-mile distance anywhere on their own between June 13th and 19th. The virtual awards ceremony and celebration took place on Saturday, June 20th. The virtual changes didn’t stop people from donating to 78 participating nonprofits, raising a total of $107,962.43.
The live ceremony included introductions and even some videos from the 78 participating nonprofit organizations. Sponsors stood by the event offering awards, community messages, and financial support. The program ended with confetti celebrations for breaking the $100,000 milestone in fundraising and announcing awards for the fastest runners as well as fun photo opportunity winners from our Novant Health sponsored Virtual Photo Booth.

The live program also included entertainment by local musicians Emma Lee Millard, who kicked off the program with the national anthem, as well as five songs by J. Timber and Kate Musselwhite Tobey, including J.Timber’s original song, Love Revolution. A half-time celebration featured over twenty Bank of America Triad employees who cheered on our community to race to the fundraising finish line and help each nonprofit reach their fundraising goals.

The Human Race is a nationwide, community fundraising event for participants to raise money for their favorite nonprofit by running, walking, or rolling and even wagging their way to the finish line. I come to you today with an open yet weary heart; as the Executive Director of The Volunteer Center of the Triad, as a concerned citizen of our country, a wife and a mother. I feel deep emotions of anger, frustration, sadness, and disappointment – we can do better and The Volunteer Center promises to stand up and help our community be better.
Ahmaud Arbery. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd. Christian Cooper. We say their names in protests, we hear their names in the media but do we know their stories? Make it a point to learn their story, truly listen. Because I believe there isn’t a person you wouldn’t love if you could read their story. And though the stories are not new, they are current examples of bias, systematic racism and brutality and it has become all too common.
I live a life of privilege because I never have to be aware of the color of my skin as it relates to my daily actions.
Inequality is visible throughout our society. The Volunteer Center vows to live out our mission statement:
